Bob Cuddy: Ruling on gay marriage spurs trivial coverage

Gay folks reacted with great joy recently when the California Supreme Court said gay marriage is legal. They quickly organized a rally at the courthouse in San Luis Obispo.

“We’re proud of California today,” said Michael Beck, president of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance of the Central Coast. “The decision isn’t only victory for the gay and lesbian community but for all people seeking equality.”

But the gay community’s joy is nothing compared to the rapture of the chattering classes—aka the punditocracy—that chronicles and influences our elections.

As soon as they heard the news, they began breathing heavily, sweat dripping off their pasty jowls.

“The wedge is back!We can ride this baby all the way through the elections. What do you mean, war and poverty and illness are more important? Are you daft? We’ll decide what matters in America!”

Sigh. Apparently, we’ll be hearing about gay marriage through the fall, courtesy of the national news media.

The ink was barely dry before the excited headlines began to appear: “Gay marriage ruling returns issue to U. S. presidential race,” The New York Times enthused. “Gay marriage back as campaign issue,” The Associated Press drooled.

The print media, however, will be downright demure compared to the electronic “news.
